This expedition is built for travellers who want real remoteness without mountaineering skills: the 4x4 vehicles do the hard kilometres across the Ak-Sai plateau, the horses carry you to places wheels cannot reach, and local horsemen accompany the group throughout. Riding experience is not required — Kyrgyz horses are calm and sure-footed, and the pace is set to the least experienced rider.
Kel-Suu lies at 3,500 m in a border zone near China, so a special border permit is required — we arrange it in advance, you only send your passport details at booking. The season is short and precious: from late June to mid-September the plateau is accessible, the yurt camps are up, and the lake reveals its full turquoise intensity. Full Itinerary
Day 1: Bishkek to At-Bashy
Depart Bishkek and head toward At-Bashy, passing through scenic valleys and mountains. Visit the historic Burana Tower, a lonely minaret standing guard over ancient history. Settle into your cozy guesthouse, enjoying the quiet village air after a long journey. Data: 390km drive. Stay: Guesthouse.
Day 2: Into the Heart of Ak-Sai
Ascend Bosogo Pass to the vast alpine plains of Ak-Sai. The landscape is dominated by snow-capped peaks and nomadic yurts that feel like they belong to a different century. Sunset at the yurt camp under a starlit sky, far from city lights, is truly unforgettable. Data: 110km drive. Stay: Yurt Camp.
Day 3: Riding to the Lush Valley
A thrilling horse ride through high-altitude meadows. Cross Sazduu Pass (3,770m) offering bird's-eye views of snowy ranges that seem to touch the clouds. Day 4: Crossing the Car Pass
Venture deeper into wilderness over Car Pass (3,791m). Untouched nature at its best with silence broken only by horse hooves. Arriving at the foot of towering peaks makes you feel truly small in the face of this vast mountain sanctuary. Data: 18km riding, Asc: +470m. Stay: Yurt Camp.
Day 5: Kel-Suu Lake & Kochkor
Ride to Kel-Suu, a turquoise gem hidden between sheer limestone cliffs. The scenery is surreal, and the water's color changes with the shifting mountain light. Drive to Kochkor, where you'll enjoy a well-deserved traditional home-cooked meal. Data: 12km riding, 6h drive. Stay: Guesthouse.
Day 6: Return to Bishkek
A scenic drive through mountain passes back to the capital. Reflect on your grand adventure as the landscapes shift from high peaks back to valley vistas, and pick up unique local souvenirs in Kochkor on the way. Data: 200km drive.

Do I need a permit to visit Kel-Suu lake?
Yes. Kel-Suu lies in a border zone near China and requires a border permit. We arrange it for you in advance — simply send your passport details when booking, at least two weeks before departure.
Do I need horse riding experience?
No. Kyrgyz horses are calm and sure-footed, local horsemen accompany the group at all times, and the pace is set to the least experienced rider. Most first-timers feel comfortable within an hour.
When can I visit Kel-Suu?
The access season is short: from late June to mid-September. Outside this window snow closes the passes and the yurt camps are taken down. July and August are the most reliable months.
How remote is this tour really?
Very — that is the point. There is no mobile coverage on the Ak-Sai plateau, nights are spent in nomad yurt camps, and you may not meet another tourist group for days. It is one of the most untouched corners of the Tien-Shan.
How cold are the nights at altitude?
Even in July, nights at 3,000–3,500 m can drop close to freezing. Yurts are heated by stoves and warm blankets are provided, but bring a warm layer and a hat for evenings.
Where does the tour start?
In Bishkek. Day 1 heads to At-Bashy through the Burana Tower, and day 6 returns you to Bishkek by evening. Airport pickup can be arranged on request.
